A bus that collects your group at Pittsburgh International must hold an airport permit and carry an airport transponder; one that does not can only meet you somewhere else. Pennsylvania's Public Utility Commission certifies the operator itself. This page provides local research and an estimate form. It does not show verified provider coverage. A person must find and check an available operator before any written quote.

How does a bus pick up a group at PIT?

Pittsburgh International's ground transportation rules are part of the Allegheny County Code (Article XI, read 2026-09-26):

  • No one may provide ground transportation at the airport "unless a written permit has been first obtained for such ground transportation service from the Director, and all fees established in connection with such permit have been paid."
  • Pickups happen only where the airport designates, and a permittee "may stage its vehicles only in those areas which are specifically assigned to that permittee." A shared holding lot is for temporary waiting, never overnight.
  • Curb time is limited: "The dwell time in this area may not exceed a period as established by ground transportation guidelines," and overstaying costs the operator an extra fee.
  • Every permitted vehicle carries an AVI transponder on its front plate, and the operator pays "a per-trip fee ... each time a vehicle accesses or re-accesses the commercial roadway system."

What that means for a group: the bus should wait in the holding lot and come to the curb once, when your coordinator calls with everyone and every bag ready, because each extra loop and each minute past the dwell limit costs the operator, and usually you. Ask the operator whether it holds a PIT permit and whether airport fees are in the quote.

Who licenses a bus operator in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania requires a certificate from the Public Utility Commission to transport passengers for compensation (read 2026-09-17). Ask the operator for its PUC certificate number with the quote. Pennsylvania also requires a USDOT number from intrastate carriers (read 2026-09-26), which you can check on FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot. See how to check a charter bus company.
